A couple of weeks ago, while refueling at a truck stop in Texas, a friendly truck driver in the next lane struck up a conversation with Kenneth. He mentioned an app he uses to save money on diesel prices, which immediately caught my attention considering how expensive fuel had become. Intrigued, I conducted some research and decided to download the app before our next stop. I thought at worst it would save us just as much as the basic rewards programs at places like Loves, Pilot, and Flying J. However, as it turns out, this app called Mudflap surpassed any other fuel rewards program we've encountered.
Using Mudflap is incredibly simple. It utilizes your location to identify nearby truck stops participating in the program. When setting up the app, you'll be prompted to add your credit card information, which you'll use for fuel payment. The best part is that you won't need to insert your card into the pump, saving you time and effort. Once you're at the pump, you open the app, select the store location, tap "get code" and swipe to pay. The app will generate a code that you can show to the cashier inside. Some truck stops might allow you to enter the code directly on the pump, while others prefer you to show the code to the cashier. Our experience has varied, with Maverik's consistently requiring code entry at the pump, while most others ask for the code to be shown to the cashier.
Now you're ready to pump! Although the pump will still display the regular fuel prices even after entering the code, the app will inform you of the actual Mudflap price (so don't panic if you don't see an immediate change on the pump). Typically, this results in savings ranging from $0.10 to $1 per gallon. Once you've finished refueling and replaced the nozzle, within a minute or two, the app will send you a text message detailing your actual total. Additionally, within the app, you can keep track of your overall savings. The first time we used Mudflap, we saved around $20, and with each subsequent fill-up, we've consistently saved a similar amount. It's astonishing how effortless it is to save such a significant sum. When you're a full-time RV traveler like us, those $20 savings per fill-up add up quickly, making this app truly worth using!
To maximize your savings, it's important to plan ahead and identify potential locations that participate in Mudflap. Keep in mind that not every area will have a participating truck stop. So far, we've seen major truck stops like Maverik's, Clines Corner, Little America, Allsup's, Conoco, and some TA locations actively participating. Although Mudflap seems to have an extensive network, it won't be available in every single city.
